GOP Senator SNAPS at Reporter Over Boat Question

A tense exchange on Capitol Hill this week exposed just how far apart Washington elites and everyday Americans remain on the issue of drug trafficking and national security.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Republican and former state attorney general, forcefully shut down a reporter who appeared to minimize cartel-linked narcotics operations by referring to drug-running vessels as simple “fishing boats.” The confrontation, caught on camera by Daily Caller News Foundation reporter Caden Olson, quickly went viral and ignited debate over how the United States should confront the fentanyl crisis.

The moment unfolded as journalists pressed Schmitt on recent U.S. actions against vessels tied to international drug trafficking networks. Democrats and their media allies have been criticizing enforcement operations at sea, suggesting the administration should take a softer approach even when dealing with cartel infrastructure.

One reporter attempted to draw a comparison between the seizure of an oil tanker and interdictions of cartel boats, implying the latter should have been handled with less force.

“If you can seize a tanker without killing anyone, shouldn’t that… If you can seize an oil tanker without killing anyone, shouldn’t that have been the way that these fishing boats were also stopped?” the reporter asked.
