The excavation also produced an assortment of additional treasures, including carved scarabs, cosmetic containers, and a copper mirror. Researchers found two alabaster kohl containers that still contained traces of ancient eye makeup, while another cosmetic vessel had been crafted from black obsidian.
Adding to the significance of the discovery were four polished stones recovered from the site. Archaeologists believe two of them may be agate, a gemstone that was highly valued throughout the ancient Near East and Egypt.
Egyptian officials described the discovery as the “first nearly complete funerary assemblage ever discovered in the area.”
The tourism ministry also noted that the excavation continues to reveal new information about the cemetery. According to the ministry, the discovery “builds upon earlier findings at the site during the current excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and two coffins found in fragmented condition.”
Officials further explained the historical importance of the cemetery, stating, “The Panhesy cemetery is particularly significant because it served as a burial ground for prominent individuals across multiple eras, from Egypt’s Late Period through the Roman era and into the Christian period.”

Ancient Heliopolis—known as “On” in several English Bible translations—served as a major religious center dedicated to the worship of the sun god Ra for centuries. Genesis 41:45 states that Pharaoh gave Joseph a wife named Asenath, identified as the daughter of Potipherah, a priest of On. Since many historians identify biblical On with ancient Heliopolis, the archaeological work has generated interest among those studying the historical setting of the Old Testament.
