In a disturbing turn of events, it has been revealed that Colt Gray surrendered to a school resource officer without any resistance and is now in custody. GBI Director Chris Hosey confirmed that Gray will be charged as an adult for these horrific crimes. The charges are serious: four counts of felony murder. More charges may follow, according to GBI officials, as the investigation continues to uncover disturbing details about the teen’s troubled past.

Colt Gray’s family has remained largely silent following the tragedy, but Gray’s aunt, Annie Brown, provided chilling insight into the boy’s mental health struggles. Speaking to the Washington Post on Thursday, Brown shared that the 14-year-old had been “begging for help from everybody around him” for some time. This statement only deepens the heartbreak, as many wonder if the shooting could have been prevented had his cries for help been addressed earlier.
An even more disturbing aspect of the case has emerged: Gray was reportedly obsessed with infamous school shootings. The New York Times revealed that investigators found evidence in Gray’s home linking him to the 2018 Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people tragically lost their lives. This revelation has only heightened the sense of fear and disbelief surrounding the case.
Adding to the chilling discoveries, authorities also unearthed details of a prior incident involving Gray. In May 2023, both Gray and his father were questioned by police after disturbing comments surfaced on a Discord channel with a Russian username that translated to “Lanza” — a reference to Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter. Gray denied responsibility for the threatening comments, claiming his account had been hacked. However, the red flags were hard to ignore.
Despite these troubling signs, law enforcement had previously advised Gray’s father to secure his firearms and keep them out of reach. According to the Daily Mail, “Police previously asked teen gunman’s dad to keep his firearms locked away.” This advice came after the FBI received a tip from concerned individuals in Australia and California about threats allegedly made by Gray on Discord, threatening to “shoot up a middle school tomorrow.” The FBI urged the father to take immediate steps to prevent access to weapons.
Though Gray’s last day of school before the summer break was only a few days after this warning, the shooter’s tragic actions on Wednesday have led many to question whether enough was done to prevent the attack.

The FBI has since confirmed that they had been aware of the 14-year-old’s online threats as early as May 2023. Several anonymous tips had alerted the agency to Gray’s alarming comments about a future school shooting. The FBI’s failure to act decisively in the months leading up to the tragedy has raised serious concerns about how these threats were handled.
To make matters worse, it has come to light that an anonymous individual called Apalachee High School just prior to the shooting, warning that it would be the first of five schools targeted. Despite these warnings, no intervention was able to stop the massacre, leaving many to wonder how such a tragedy could have been averted.
As the investigation continues, Gray is expected to appear in court on Friday, where he will face official charges as an adult. The loss of four lives and the injury of dozens more is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers schools face today. The Winder community—and the nation—mourns the victims of this senseless act of violence, and many are now demanding answers about how to prevent future tragedies.
