Devastating news is delivered to Merrick Garland, which might have serious repercussions for him.

Attorney General Garland confirmed in his appearance before the Senate that U.S. Attorney David Weiss had full authority to bring any necessary criminal charges in the Hunter Biden investigation.

“[Weiss] is in charge of that investigation. There will not be interference of any political or improper kind,” Senator Bill Haggerty, a Republican from Tennessee, asked a question, and Garland responded.

Republicans attack Garland for allegedly lying to Congress after IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley testified. Weiss allegedly told six other witnesses during a meeting on October 7, 2022 that he lacked full power to bring charges against Hunter Biden and that his request for special counsel had been denied.

“United States Attorney Weiss was present for the meeting. He surprised us by telling us on the charges, quote: ‘I’m not the deciding official on whether charges are filed,’ unquote,” Shapley testified.

“To add to the surprise, U.S. Attorney Weiss stated that he subsequently asked for special counsel authority from Main DOJ at that time and was denied that authority. Instead, he was told to follow the process, which was known to send U.S. Attorney Weiss through another President Biden-appointed U.S. Attorney,” Shapley added.

Jim Jordan, the chairman of the judiciary committee, urged Weiss to explain the contradiction. Weiss responded by writing Jordan a letter endorsing Shapley’s story.

Weiss admits that his attempts to bring criminal charges against Hunter Biden were hampered by the Washington, D.C., and California U.S. Attorneys that Joe Biden selected. He also discloses that his application for special counsel designation was turned down by the Biden Justice Department.

“As the U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, my charging authority is limited to my home district. If venue for a case lies elsewhere, common Departmental practice is to contact the United States Attorney’s Office for the district in question and determine whether it wants to partner on the case. If not, I may request Special Attorney status from the Attorney General pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 515. Here, I have been assured that, if necessary after the above process, I would be granted § 515 in the District of Columbia, the Central District of California, or any other district where charges could be brought in this matter,” Weiss wrote.

Republican calls to impeach Attorney General Garland for lying to Congress increased in response to the disclosure.
