In a brewing election controversy, Fulton County’s decision to count absentee ballots over the weekend without Republican poll observers has escalated tensions in Georgia. This move, along with similar actions from Cobb, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties, has led the Republican National Committee (RNC) to take legal action, sparking concerns about transparency and compliance with Georgia state law. Republican officials are questioning the legality of this decision and have swiftly filed a lawsuit against the counties involved.
The RNC argues that these counties are violating Georgia election law by keeping drop boxes open past the close of the advance voting period, as the statute mandates that “all drop boxes shall be closed when the advance voting period ends.” The Georgia Republican Party released a statement Friday condemning the decision, stating, “This is a blatant violation of Georgia law.” Further, the statement points out that the election office locations involved in the weekend ballot processing are positioned in areas likely to lean heavily Democratic, adding fuel to the GOP’s concerns over potential partisan handling of the ballots.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley criticized what he describes as Democratic officials “playing fast and loose” with election rules, alleging that these counties intentionally blocked Republican poll watchers from entering the premises to monitor the ballot count. According to the RNC, Fulton County staff received direct orders from the Registration Manager to bar GOP observers from the building. The email allegedly stated, “Do not let them in the building. If they want to observe from the parking lot, you can’t stop that, but they are not allowed to sit in the building.”
