FCC Equal Time Rule Sparks Chaos For Kimmel

Late night host Jimmy Kimmel is once again hinting at mobilizing his audience after federal regulators reminded broadcast networks that the law applies to them too.

During his Wednesday night monologue, Kimmel told his studio audience he might “need their help again,” a phrase that instantly raised eyebrows across the media industry. The last time he used those words, ABC temporarily pulled his show after pressure from federal regulators and station owners.

That was just four months ago.

Now, the Federal Communications Commission has reignited panic inside corporate media by enforcing a rule that has been on the books since 1934.

And Hollywood is not handling it well.

A Law Older Than Television Suddenly Matters Again

At the center of the controversy is Section 315 of the Communications Act, also known as the Equal Time Rule. The law requires broadcast networks to offer equal airtime to all legally qualified political candidates when one is given access during an election cycle.
