During the Russia-Ukraine War, Ukraine was in charge of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines, according to a Saturday Washington Post article. This disclosure offers the most convincing proof to date that the military and security establishment in Ukraine was complicit in a contentious act of sabotage. Numerous criminal investigations have resulted from U.S. and Western officials characterizing the sabotage as a “dangerous assault on Europe’s energy infrastructure”.
“A senior Ukrainian military officer with deep ties to the country’s intelligence services played a central role in the bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last year, according to officials in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe, as well as other people knowledgeable about the details of the covert operation,” WaPo reported.

According to a report, a courageous operation was meticulously planned by Colonel Roman Chervinsky, 48, a decorated former member of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces. Chervinsky, in charge of support and logistics, organized a group of six people to rent a sailboat on false pretenses. Using deep-sea diving equipment, they deftly positioned explosive charges on crucial gas pipelines.
The report identified Chervinsky as the pivotal player in the Nord Stream operation. Three explosions on September 26, 2022, caused major breaches in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines that cross the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. Winter was on the way, so things got better despite the attack that disrupted one of the network’s four gas connections.
People with knowledge of the situation claim that Chervinsky did not start the operation or work alone. This information was not previously available.
According to confidential sources, senior Ukrainian officials gave instructions to the officer in charge, who then reported to Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, the country’s top military officer. The sources have asked to remain anonymous in order to discuss sensitive information regarding the bombing incident, which has impacted diplomatic relations with Ukraine and resulted in objections from U.S. officials.
Ukraine has engaged in a number of daring and covert operations with Russian forces. The Nord Stream attack was one such operation that attempted to destroy the infrastructure used by millions of Europeans for their daily energy needs. Gazprom, a state-owned gas conglomerate in Russia, owns 51 percent of Nord Stream, but Western energy companies, including partners from Germany, France, and the Netherlands, have made significant investments in the project. Since Nord Stream would let Russia avoid Ukrainian pipelines and deny the nation significant transit income, Ukraine has long opposed the project.
Chervinsky dismisses Russian propaganda as unfounded rumors and denies any involvement in pipeline sabotage. In correspondence with The Washington Post and Der Spiegel, he highlights that his actions were looked into collaboratively.
Regarding Chervinsky’s role, the Ukrainian government has not responded to a number of queries.

Chervinsky’s role highlights the intricate power relationships within Kyiv’s government during the conflict. Conflicts between Ukraine’s military and intelligence establishment and political leadership are common.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Chervinsky has been stationed with the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. Leading resistance operations in regions occupied by Russia is the main responsibility of his position. He works closely and submits to Maj. Gen. Viktor Hanushchak, an extremely experienced and well-respected officer.
Chervinsky was the ideal candidate to conduct a covert operation meant to hide Ukraine’s involvement because of his extensive background and his prominent positions in the military intelligence agency and Ukrainian Security Service. His ability in this regard was further strengthened by his close relationships to influential military and security personnel.
He has also contributed to the execution of covert operations.
Chervinsky is presently incarcerated in a Kyiv prison. His detention stems from allegations that he abused his position of power in connection with a scheme to convince a Russian pilot to defect to Ukraine in July 2022. The prosecution claims that Chervinsky operated without authorization and that the Russian missile attack that resulted from his disclosure of the airfield’s coordinates during the operation injured seventeen soldiers and killed one. In April, Chervinsky was taken into custody.
Chervinsky says he was just carrying out orders when he pushed the pilot to fly to Ukraine and give up, denying any involvement in the Russian attack. He feels that his arrest and prosecution are political reprisals for his criticism of Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, and his government.
One of Zelensky’s closest advisors, Andriy Yermak, raised suspicions in public that Chervinsky suspected of having ties to Russian intelligence. In addition, he attacked the Zelensky government for failing to sufficiently ready the country for a possible Russian invasion.
In a written statement to The Post and Der Spiegel, Chervinsky stated that the SBU, Air Force, and Special Operations Forces all played a critical role in helping to find the Russian pilot. Captain Valery Zaluzhny gave his approval for the operation.
Chervinsky’s involvement in the Nord Stream attack directly contradicts Zelensky’s denials.
“I am president and I give orders accordingly,” in a June press conference, Zelensky addressed a Post article stating that the U.S. Prior to the attack, the Central Intelligence Agency was aware of Ukraine’s plans.
The pressure on US politicians who continue to support financial aid to Ukraine in its unending conflict with Russia is increased by the recent report linking Ukraine to the Nord Stream pipeline bombings.
