Currently, McGonigal is facing criminal charges for working with Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska.
McGonigal wants to amend his plea from “not guilty” to “guilty,” according to Judge Reardon.
“Mr. McGonigal, a former top FBI counterintelligence agent based in New York, is the fourth major FBI figure from the Trump-Russia collusion probe to face criminal charges or end up under investigation,” reports the Washington Times.

Mr. McGonigal faces multiple criminal charges related to allegedly violating U.S. sanctions by taking payments from Mr. Deripaska in exchange for investigating a rival Russian oligarch,” the Times also reports.
McGonigal had a key role in starting the witch hunt in Russia. He was the first person to alert the FBI’s Washington, D.C., headquarters about George Papadopoulos’ discussion with an Australian ambassador in which he allegedly indicated that the Russians had damaging material about Hillary Clinton.

“In September 2020, FBI Deputy Assistant Director Jonathan Moffa said, during Senate Judiciary Committee questioning, he received an email in July 2016 from McGonigal about Papadopoulos that ‘contained essentially that reporting, which then served as the basis for the opening of the case,’” Newsweek reported.
