Exclusive: Inside McCarthy’s Unexpected Decision!

Leading House Republican Kevin McCarthy will not run for re-election as speaker. After a motion was approved on Tuesday, he was fired from his job. McCarthy revealed the information at the outset in a closed-door GOP gathering, according to many congressional reporters and House lawmakers. He then confirmed the news in front of the public during a press conference.

After weeks of suspense, Congressman Matt Gaetz makes a bold attempt to remove McCarthy from office. Gaetz and his conservative friends complain that pledges made before the speaker vote in January were breached during McCarthy’s budget discussions with the Democrats.

Twenty members opposed McCarthy, the Republican congressman, in January. On Tuesday, however, just eight people voted in favor of the proposal to demote him. McCarthy only needed the backing of five opponents to remain in office, but in the end, Democrats decided to remove him from that position.

Reputable news organizations including the Washington Post, Politico, and ABC broke many stories in response to McCarthy’s resignation. They disclosed that McCarthy had made the decision not to run for speaker of the house again.

Soon after, McCarthy spoke to the country in a news conference, thanking the people of the United States for the chance to serve as House speaker and outlining his unexpected political career. The former House GOP leader called his stint as speaker of the house “one of the greatest honors, I loved every minute.”

“I do not regret negotiating, our government is designed to find compromise. I don’t regret my efforts to build coalitions and find solutions. I was raised to solve problems, not create them,” McCarthy said. “So I may have lost the vote today, but as I walk out of this chamber I feel fortunate to have served the American people. I leave the speakership with a sense of pride, accomplishment, and yes, optimism.”

“From the day I entered politics, my mission has always been to make tomorrow better than today. I fought for what I believe in, and I believe in this country of America,” he continued. “My goals have not changed, my ability to fight is just in a different form.”

McCarthy then responded to his Republican critics by saying, “You need 218. Unfortunately, four percent of the Republican conference can join all the Democrats and dictate who can be the Republican speaker in this House.” He continued by saying that in his opinion, the institution should not follow the motion to vacate regulation.

“I will not run for speaker again, I’ll have the conference pick somebody else,” McCarthy confirmed.

He said goodbye to the conference and thanked the American people for the opportunity to serve, alluding to Lou Gehrig’s well-known “luckiest man” remark.
