Even Barkley Turned on LeBron

Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Barkley made it clear that his position had nothing to do with the president or partisan politics.

“I don’t pay what President Trump says any attention, first and foremost, at all,” Barkley said.

But he quickly followed that statement with criticism of James’ conduct.

“But I thought that was very disrespectful, practicing your golf swing in the middle of the anthem,” he added.

That assessment carries considerable weight. Barkley isn’t a conservative political commentator or a member of Trump’s inner circle. He’s a prominent figure in professional basketball, an industry where James has enjoyed extraordinary success and influence for more than two decades.

In other words, this wasn’t simply another political disagreement. It was a fellow basketball legend publicly questioning James’ judgment.

Barkley went on to explain why he believes the anthem deserves special consideration, particularly in a country where Americans enjoy the freedom to express disagreement with their government.

“I always stand for the anthem. I just think it’s important. We live in the greatest country ever where you can always protest, but I think you have to be very careful with the anthem,” he said.

Trump Had a Message for LeBron — And James Brushed It Off

President Trump also took issue with the incident, using Truth Social to deliver a pointed rebuke to the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

Trump argued that James’ behavior was disrespectful not only to the American flag but also to the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives defending the nation.

“I said right from the beginning that he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE,” Trump said. “LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!”

James, however, appeared uninterested in engaging with the president’s criticism.

When reporters asked about Trump’s remarks, the NBA superstar responded with a dismissive comment.

“It’s a slow news day at the office, you know,” he told reporters. “Slow news day in the office.”

That response may have ended the exchange with Trump, but it hasn’t put the controversy to rest.

Barkley’s intervention has introduced a different dimension to the debate. His criticism suggests that respect for the national anthem isn’t necessarily a partisan issue, and that disagreement with the president doesn’t require someone to defend every action taken by a prominent celebrity.

A Pattern of Controversial Anthem Moments

The latest incident has also revived scrutiny of James’ previous appearances during the national anthem.

According to the account of the incidents, this wasn’t an isolated moment. James previously attracted attention during a nationally televised Christmas Day Lakers game, when he was seen standing in line and moving through his golf swing while the anthem played.

Another controversy emerged in December 2023, when James arrived late to watch his son, Bronny, play for USC.

Rather than being present for the beginning of the anthem, James entered the arena while it was being performed, wearing a hat, before making his way to his courtside seat.

These moments have fueled criticism from those who believe that public figures should demonstrate greater consideration for national traditions, particularly when they enjoy the privileges and opportunities afforded by living in the United States.

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was among those who criticized James following the 2023 incident.

Kanter Freedom’s criticism focused on what he viewed as a troubling contrast between James’ public behavior in America and his business interests connected to China. His argument was that James would likely show considerably more deference toward China’s national symbols because of the financial relationships involved.

That criticism touched on an issue that has followed James for years: the intersection of professional sports, international business interests, and political principles.

The Defense of LeBron James Isn’t Convincing Everyone

Supporters of James have argued that his movements during the anthem shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as a political statement.

Some have suggested that he was simply stretching, moving around, or practicing his golf swing rather than deliberately attempting to insult the United States.

But that explanation has done little to quiet the controversy.

For critics, the issue isn’t whether James intended to make a political statement. It’s whether someone with his enormous influence should recognize the significance of a national tradition that millions of Americans hold dear.

The comparison with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has also entered the discussion.

Kaepernick’s national anthem protests were deliberate and accompanied by an explanation of his political and social beliefs. James’ defenders may argue that his behavior was different, but that distinction hasn’t stopped critics from questioning why he couldn’t simply remain still for the brief ceremony.

James is among the most commercially successful athletes in history. His career has brought him extraordinary wealth, international recognition, and opportunities that few people will ever experience.

For many Americans, those achievements make the question of showing basic respect for the country particularly relevant.

Barkley Explains Why Standing for the Anthem Matters

Perhaps the most important part of Barkley’s comments was his explanation of what standing for the national anthem represents to him.

He made clear that respecting the anthem doesn’t mean abandoning the right to criticize the government or disagree with political leaders.

In fact, he specifically connected the tradition to the freedoms Americans enjoy.

“I’m supporting the troops when I stand for the national anthem. I’m standing there for free speech, so even though I believe in free speech, I think you have to be very careful with the anthem. I always stand for the anthem. I think it’s important, and I think it’s significant,” he said.

That message cuts through much of the political noise surrounding the controversy.

Americans can disagree with Trump. They can criticize Congress, protest government policies, and challenge the decisions of elected officials. Those freedoms are fundamental to the country.

But Barkley believes there is still room for a basic gesture of respect toward the nation and the people who have defended it.

Ultimately, the controversy isn’t about whether LeBron James supports a particular political party or agrees with the president.

It’s about whether a moment of national recognition deserves a few seconds of attention.

Barkley has made his position clear, and his criticism is particularly difficult to dismiss as partisan politics.

For a man who has spent decades in the spotlight, the expectation is remarkably simple: When the national anthem plays, stand still and show respect.

Thirty seconds is hardly an unreasonable request.
