The lawsuit stems from growing outrage over policies pushed by Gov. Mills, a Democrat who has positioned herself as one of the most aggressively anti-Trump governors in the country. Her insistence on allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports has not only angered parents and students but now landed her in legal trouble.
This battle has been brewing for months. Back in February, tensions erupted during a national gathering of state governors when President Trump personally urged Mills to reconsider her stance on Title IX enforcement. Rather than cooperate, Mills smugly fired back with a threat:
“See you in court,” she snapped.
Well, now she’s getting exactly what she asked for.
At Wednesday’s presser, Bondi made it crystal clear that the Trump administration isn’t backing down.
“This is a violation of Title IX, the Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports,” Bondi said. “This is also about these young women’s personal safety.
“I have met many of these women throughout these past weeks and months, and what they have been through is horrific. We have exhausted every other remedy.”

The lawsuit follows a wave of federal actions aimed at pushing back against radical gender ideology in public institutions. In fact, Maine’s Department of Education had already seen its federal funding frozen by the Trump administration — a move that drew loud protests from Mills and her allies.
Still, some within the state have started to quietly distance themselves from the governor’s stance. The University of Maine, for instance, recently broke ranks by reversing its support for transgender participation in women’s sports. That move, insiders say, could restore access to roughly $30 million in federal aid annually.
Bondi was joined at the conference by Riley Gaines — a former NCAA swimming star and now one of the most powerful voices in the fight to protect women’s sports. Standing alongside her was Stephanie Turner, a collegiate fencer who made national headlines for refusing to compete against a transgender opponent.
Turner didn’t hold back when asked about the significance of the lawsuit.
“It’s sad that this has to be a political issue, and I think this was a missed opportunity by the Democrats to garner support among the vast majority of the United States,” she said, according to Fox News. “I’m so grateful that we have an administration that is taking this issue seriously.”

President Trump already signed an executive order earlier this year titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”, which instructs all federal agencies to interpret Title IX in accordance with biological sex at birth. The order gives sweeping authority to cut funding to any institution that violates this policy — and Mills’ education department just became the latest example.
But Maine isn’t alone in facing scrutiny. The administration has also opened a separate investigation into Denver Public Schools over allegations it replaced a girls-only bathroom with a so-called “gender-inclusive” facility. Trump has even warned the International Olympic Committee to stay in line — threatening action if transgender athletes are allowed to compete in women’s categories at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
The message is loud and clear: under President Trump, the war on woke ideology is in full swing. And with this latest legal offensive, Janet Mills just found herself on the frontlines — whether she likes it or not.
