A Catholic congregation in Ecuador was left devastated after a massive wooden crucifix fell from a church wall and fatally struck a priest as he celebrated Mass over the weekend. The tragedy unfolded just moments after the clergyman delivered a sermon urging parishioners to focus on their faith, their families, and the time they spend with loved ones.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was leading Mass on Saturday in Guayaquil, Ecuador, when the enormous crucifix suddenly became dislodged and fell on top of him. Worshippers who had gathered for the religious service watched in shock as the incident turned an ordinary church gathering into a desperate attempt to save the priest’s life.
The accident took on an especially heartbreaking dimension because of the message Father Sánchez Molinari had shared with his congregation shortly before the tragedy. Speaking about the importance of faith and the limited time people have in this world, he reminded those in attendance that life is temporary and that their priorities should reflect what truly matters.
“Dear brothers and sisters, one day we will all die, and the time we spent on trivial things will prove far less meaningful than the time we invested in God,” said Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari.
