Did You Hear? Tennessee Just Did THIS

By adopting the first law in the nation forbidding drag shows on public property near schools, the state of Tennessee has made a strong statement against gender and expression diversity. Also, as a result of this legislative change, minors are no longer permitted to have gender transition procedures.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee put an end to the terrible acts and treatments on Thursday because they were endangering the growth of young children. With the passage of this new legislation, Tennessee became the first state to impose restrictions on holding drag shows or gender transition procedures when kids are present.

Tight regulations have been put in place to prevent locals from being exposed to the potentially risqué atmosphere of adult cabaret performances at a short distance from institutions like schools, parks, and houses of worship.

Republican legislators in some state legislatures have recently taken a position and introduced legislation to limit performances they believe to be unpleasant and improper in an effort to save children from the possible hazards of drag shows. Most notably, Jack Johnson, the majority leader in the Tennessee Senate, took the lead with Senate Bill 3, a daring but divisive attempt to ban “sexual nature” actions in places where minors might be present.

In the upcoming months, Tennessee’s drag performers will have to deal with a sobering reality: cross certain lines, and they risk going to jail. From next month, anyone caught practicing their art form in public or even visibly to kids might face steep fines of up to $2,500, as well as jail time; any additional offenses would result in a six-year sentence owing to higher felony charges.

Tennessee became the eighth state, as of July 1st, to pass legislation that forbids doctors from performing gender-affirming procedures or giving hormone and puberty-blocking treatments to transgender adolescents. This law comes after an uptick in comparable bills this year alone—four have been introduced—underscoring an increasingly constrictive attitude toward the rights of young trans persons.

Gov. Tate Reeves (R) of Mississippi signed a contentious measure on Wednesday that forbids children in the state from obtaining gender-affirming medical treatment. Residents and activists across the country have expressed strong outrage over the decision because they feel it violates the rights of young people.

Some of the most well-known civil rights organizations in the country have gotten involved in the fight against discriminatory legislation. The American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal have both declared their intention to file a lawsuit in response to a new statute, continuing their on-going fight for equality that started with similar lawsuits in Alabama and Arkansas.

The two groups said, “We will not allow this dangerous law to stand. Certain politicians and Gov. Lee have made no secret of their intent to discriminate against youth who are transgender or their willful ignorance about the life-saving health care they seek to ban. Instead, they’ve chosen fearmongering, misrepresentations, intimidation, and extremist politics over the rights of families and the lives of transgender youth in Tennessee.”

The statement finished, “We are dedicated to overturning this unconstitutional law and are confident the state will find itself completely incapable of defending it in court. We want transgender youth to know they are not alone and this fight is not over.”
