A cornerstone of the deal, Bessent revealed, is securing access to rare earth magnets—an indispensable component in everything from high-tech defense systems to everyday electronics.
“Part of the agreement was tariffs coming down and rare earth magnets starting to flow back to the U.S.,” Bessent explained. “They form the core of a lot of our industrial base. They were not flowing as fast as previously agreed.”
This is no minor achievement. China has long wielded its control over rare earth minerals as a geopolitical cudgel, threatening to squeeze American manufacturers and defense contractors who rely on these materials.
The Biden-Harris team, Bessent implied, failed to rein in that threat. Under their watch, China kept a tight grip on exports, jeopardizing American supply chains and national security.
President Trump, however, refused to accept being held hostage.
Bessent detailed how Trump’s calculated use of tariffs and countermeasures forced Beijing to the table and compelled them to loosen the stranglehold on these critical exports.
“And I am confident now that, as agreed, the magnets will flow,” Bessent said. “In the meantime, we had put countermeasures versus the Chinese in place. We had held back some vital supplies from them. So what we’re seeing here is a de-escalation under President Trump’s leadership.”
The breakthrough emerged from intense negotiations, culminating in a recent summit in London. President Trump confirmed the deal in a triumphant post on Truth Social, writing: “our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me.”
But the trade pact goes beyond simply lifting tariffs or restoring rare earth shipments. It signals a seismic shift in how the United States handles its biggest economic rival.
For decades, both Democratic and Republican administrations allowed Beijing to tilt the playing field. American markets were flooded with cheap Chinese goods, while U.S. firms faced hurdles selling into China.
Bessent made it crystal clear that the Trump administration shattered that pattern of weakness.
“The important thing to note here is, this is the centerpiece of making trade more fair for American workers, for the American people,” Bessent said. “And this is happening across the entire spectrum with our trading partners.”
He emphasized that Trump’s decisive actions in his initial months back in the White House were the catalyst for these wins.
“So, in the first 100 days, we set the table for the peace deals, the trade deals and the tax deals,” Bessent added. “And now, in this 100 days, we’re bringing them all home. But this is the centerpiece of fair trade, which is something we haven’t seen in the U.S. in 40 years.”
That statement alone amounts to a stinging rebuke of American leadership since the Reagan era. For forty years, presidents from both parties allowed China to exploit U.S. industries, costing jobs and hollowing out factories.
Trump’s “America First” agenda is flipping that script.
Bessent pulled back the curtain on the broader strategy guiding Trump’s tough-but-calculated dealings with China. Washington, he noted, faces a fork in the road: either pull away from China entirely or force Beijing to become a responsible trading partner.
“China accounts for 30% of the manufacturing in the world, and that’s not sustainable,” Bessent said. “So, we will see if they want to be a responsible partner. My sense is they do. As I mentioned, President Trump, Party Chair Xi, they have a very good relationship, so it’s very helpful to have the leadership there constantly speaking.”
That personal connection between Trump and Xi has proven invaluable. Unlike Biden’s team, which struggled with missteps and icy diplomatic relations, Trump kept open lines of communication with Beijing’s top leader.
That direct diplomacy helped cut through bureaucratic gridlock and deliver real results for American workers and businesses.
It’s no wonder Democrats are seething. They spent years warning that Trump’s policies would torch America’s standing with China and tank the economy. Instead, the Trump team just secured a deal that guarantees vital rare earth resources, slashes tariffs, and boosts American manufacturing.
It’s a clear win for American industry—and a bitter pill for critics who doubted Trump’s trade instincts.
President Trump promised to prioritize American workers and industries above all else. With this new agreement in place, he’s proving that promise wasn’t just campaign talk—it’s a blueprint for keeping America strong and prosperous for years to come.
