Other Democratic lawmakers soon followed, visiting the Central American nation as if Garcia were a political prisoner and not a violent gang associate.
The mainstream media dutifully played along, labeling Garcia a “Maryland man” and falsely claiming he was in the U.S. legally. They weaved a story of injustice, pretending due process had been denied and warning that his deportation could somehow set a precedent for kicking out American citizens.
But the Truth Caught Up — Fast
What Democrats didn’t count on was the damning information waiting just below the surface.
Garcia’s wife had filed two protective orders against him for domestic abuse. She even told law enforcement she had audio of him saying he could murder her and “get away with it.” On top of that, Garcia had been caught driving without a license in Tennessee, crammed in a vehicle with eight others — in a car owned by a suspected human trafficker.
That didn’t stop Democrats at first — until party leaders realized they’d walked straight into another political minefield. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) reportedly issued a quiet directive to his caucus: stop the El Salvador trips.
“They want to let the El Salvador stuff slow down,” a senior House staffer told The Bulwark.
Two of Jeffries’ aides have been urging Democrats to back off, recognizing that elevating a violent illegal alien was not only politically suicidal but morally indefensible.
