Arizona Democrat Senator Mark Kelly made an unannounced trip to Ukraine over the weekend, appearing to counter President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to end the war ignited by Russia in 2022 under Joe Biden’s watch. Kelly’s visit coincides with an upcoming meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia this Tuesday. Reports remain mixed on whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, currently in Saudi Arabia, will attend. National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are also involved in the talks.
In an astonishing statement, Kelly warned Trump that abandoning Ukraine would embolden China to invade Taiwan, blatantly ignoring the reality that it was Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 that paved the way for Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Kelly also suggested Trump was acting like a “bully” toward Zelenskyy—seemingly forgetting that Trump has consistently pushed for peace while Zelenskyy has continued pressing for more U.S. aid and weapons.

Kelly expressed outrage over Trump’s recent decision to halt intelligence sharing with Ukraine after determining that Zelenskyy was not ready for peace, calling the move “sickening.”
Meanwhile, Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after returning from his weekend at Mar-a-Lago, hinted that intelligence-sharing with Ukraine could resume soon under the right conditions. He also reaffirmed his optimism about upcoming peace negotiations.
