A political earthquake just hit South Florida, and the aftershocks are rippling straight through the Democratic Party. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat who has fashioned herself as a champion of “working families,” now finds herself staring down a federal indictment that outlines one of the most brazen abuses of taxpayer disaster funds in recent memory.
According to federal prosecutors, Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, allegedly siphoned a staggering $5 million in FEMA money—funds meant to support emergency COVID-19 operations—and quietly funneled the cash into accounts that ultimately boosted the congresswoman’s 2021 campaign. What was supposed to help communities devastated by a national emergency allegedly ended up fueling a political machine.
The Justice Department isn’t mincing words about the scale of the scheme or the levels of deception investigators say they uncovered. If convicted, Cherfilus-McCormick could face a jaw-dropping 53 years in federal prison. Instead of serving her constituents, she may soon be serving time.
