A Democratic judge in Texas is facing serious legal trouble after being arrested for allegedly participating in a widespread ballot harvesting scheme. The arrest was announced by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the state’s political landscape.
Frio County Judge Rochelle Lozano Camacho, a prominent local Democrat, has been charged with three counts of illegal ballot harvesting tied to her 2022 primary campaign. According to Paxton’s office, Camacho is accused of orchestrating a plan to manipulate mail-in ballots during her tightly contested primary race. She allegedly enlisted the help of her sister – the county’s election administrator – along with two Pearsall, Texas, city council members and another woman, forming a tight-knit group allegedly focused on swaying the outcome of the election.
The alleged plot, which investigators claim stretched over multiple election cycles, was focused primarily on elderly voters in a Pearsall subdivision. According to an ABC affiliate KSAT report, Camacho’s campaign allegedly paid a longtime party operative between $1,500 and $2,000 to collect ballots, complete applications, and transport voters to polling stations. The effort reportedly included methods to conceal these activities, with one witness claiming an aide even hid ballots under her shirt to avoid detection by authorities.
