Democrat Christina Bohannan has spent the past year trying to brand herself as a blue-collar warrior fighting for families “struggling to put food on the table.” But the polished political story she offers Iowa voters looks very different once you examine her bank statements, property records, and real estate empire.
For someone who claims to understand hardship, her lifestyle sure doesn’t look like someone clipping coupons at the end of the month.
At rallies and fairgrounds, Bohannan leans heavily on a rehearsed origin tale about growing up poor. She tells crowds she knows the pain of tough choices. “You know, I know what it’s like to work so hard and to, to still struggle to put food on the table,” she told fairgoers during the Iowa State Fair. She repeats this theme everywhere she goes, telling Iowa Public Radio that “she knows what it’s like to struggle.” She invokes memories of a trailer park and moments when choosing “between putting groceries in the cart and filling prescription drugs” defined life.
