As former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie criticizes former President Donald Trump for skipping the second Republican presidential debate at the Reagan Library in California, audible boos and moans permeate the room.
Christie switched to criticizing the previous president after responding to a question on crime and employing U.S. attorneys to bring criminals to justice in communities with Democratic mayors. “And Donald Trump should be here to answer for that but he’s not,” Christie said before facing the camera.
“And I wanna look in the camera right now and tell ya’: Donald, I know you’re watching. You can’t help yourself,” Christie said, eliciting gasps from the audience. “And you’re not here tonight not because of polls, and not because of your indictments, you’re not here tonight, because you’re afraid of being on this stage and defending your record,” he continued.
“You’re ducking these things. And let me tell ya’ what’s gonna happen; you keep doing that, nobody up here is gonna call you Donald Trump anymore, we’re gonna call you Donald Duck,” Christie stated before pausing to hear applause. Instead, he was greeted with boos and moans.
In order to address the autoworkers at Drake Enterprises in Michigan, Trump missed the debate.
Formerly a staunch supporter of Trump and the head of his transition team, Christie has suddenly turned against him. His campaign now focuses heavily on his opposition to Trump. In fact, when Christie again attacked Trump at the most recent GOP presidential debate, there were boos.
“Someone has got to stop normalizing this conduct,” Christie said. “It is beneath the office of the president of the United States.”
“Now whether or not, you believe that the criminal charges are right are wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of the president of the United States,” He went on, eliciting some applause but far more jeers. He then accepted the criticism and said that it was okay to be jeered by Americans under the First Amendment. “This is the great thing about this country; booing is allowed, but it does not change the truth.”
Christie paused as the audience burst into loud booing. Bret Baier, the debate moderator, had to step in and ask the boisterous audience to calm down.
