Hollywood actor Robert De Niro is once again drawing attention for his outspoken political remarks, this time declaring that he cannot love the United States while Donald Trump remains a dominant force in American politics.
Speaking at an event in New York City on Sunday, the 82-year-old actor delivered a highly charged critique of the former president, accusing Trump of a range of extreme political and moral failings. De Niro described Trump as a “racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant” and claimed that his leadership has fundamentally damaged the nation’s identity and global standing.
During his remarks, which quickly spread across social media platforms, De Niro attempted to frame his political frustration in emotional terms, comparing patriotism under current conditions to an unhealthy relationship. “I hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser,” De Niro said in remarks that later circulated online.
The actor went on to level sweeping criticisms of U.S. foreign and domestic policy, tying his grievances directly to the nation as a whole. “I can’t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents and indirectly causing the deaths and suffering of millions more,” De Niro said.
