Osman also revealed that the Minneapolis Somali community was well aware of the situation, describing how Elmi arrived from the United Kingdom and was perceived as “effeminate” in his dress and mannerisms. “People began noticing that Ilhan and [Hirsi] were often with a very effeminate young guy,” Osman recalled. “He was very feminine in the way he dressed—he would wear light lipstick and pink clothes and very, very short shorts in the summer. People started whispering about him.”
The lack of a traditional Islamic wedding for Omar and Elmi also raised suspicions. Osman explained that when Omar married Hirsi, it was a widely attended event, uniting two major Somali clans. However, the marriage to Elmi was kept secret, with no community acknowledgment until investigative journalists uncovered the marriage certificate years later.
Osman claims that because both Omar and Elmi are Muslim, they had to conduct the marriage through a Christian minister, as local imams would have likely refused to officiate due to their familial connection. “When she married Elmi, no one even knew about it,” Osman stated. “No one knew there had been a wedding until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later.”
Records show that Omar married Hirsi in a traditional Muslim ceremony in 2002, though it was never legally registered. She then legally married Elmi in 2009, while still religiously married to Hirsi. At the time, she claimed she had separated from Hirsi a year earlier. However, Osman maintains that she continued her relationship with Hirsi throughout her legal marriage to Elmi.
Adding to the controversy, a Somali diaspora website, Somalispot, had already raised suspicions about Omar and Elmi’s relationship in 2016. Reports indicated that as soon as they married, Elmi enrolled at North Dakota State University, Omar’s alma mater, and graduated in 2012. He later moved to Minneapolis, where he resided in public housing before being evicted and returning to the U.K.
Despite the mounting claims, Omar has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless, absurd rumors.” Yet, the evidence continues to build. Reports indicate that the FBI has recently engaged with a source in possession of a cache of documents allegedly tying Omar to immigration fraud. If proven, such an offense carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
