Pope Francis has once again found himself at the center of controversy after labeling Israel’s defensive actions in Gaza as “terrorism.” The pontiff’s remarks, made during the Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, have sparked outrage among those who see Israel’s military response as a legitimate defense against ongoing attacks from Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups.
On October 7, 2023, Israel faced one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in its history. Hamas and allied factions launched a coordinated assault, targeting civilians and security forces indiscriminately. Human Rights Watch has documented severe violations of international humanitarian law during the attack, noting that these actions could amount to war crimes. The brutality of the attack was shocking, with Israeli authorities reporting that 1,195 individuals lost their lives, including 815 civilians, among them foreign nationals, women, and children. The assault also led to a significant hostage crisis, with around 251 civilians and members of the Israeli security forces being taken into Gaza by these armed groups.

In light of these events, many expected the Pope’s message to be one of support for Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens. Instead, Pope Francis chose to focus on the suffering in Gaza, describing Israel’s military actions as “terrorism.” He stated, “I continue to receive very serious and painful news from Gaza. Unarmed civilians are subjected to bombings and shootings. And this even happened inside the parish complex of the Holy Family, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, sick and disabled people, nuns.” His comments, seen by many as one-sided, ignore the complexities of urban warfare, where terrorist organizations often use civilian areas as shields, complicating military operations.
