The tone was calm. The reporting was factual. And the mission was presented as routine law enforcement.
ICE agents were shown targeting individuals with criminal records, and CNN allowed those agents to explain their purpose without interruption or hostility.
“He is a criminal, he has extensive criminal history, and by taking him out of the community, it’s making the community safer and that’s ICE’s purpose,” one agent explained.
Rather than challenge the claim, CNN reinforced it—going so far as to display on-screen graphics supporting ICE’s criticism of sanctuary policies.
“ICE says the county ordinance creates a danger to the community by releasing undocumented criminals back onto the streets,” CNN told viewers.
There was no talk of “terrorized communities.” No ominous music. No suggestion that ICE agents were villains. Brown methodically walked viewers through the arrest process, treating it as what it was: standard enforcement of federal law.
The segment concluded with a simple fact-based summary: “On this day ICE detained 6 for possible deportation. 2 of them were released because they didn’t have criminal records.”
Obama’s Deportation Machine, Media Silence
What makes the clip so damaging to CNN’s credibility is the broader context. The Obama administration deported more than 3.1 million people over eight years, with removals peaking at roughly 435,000 in 2013.
Even Obama’s own advisors later admitted that enforcement policies caused severe disruption to families and immigrant communities. In January 2016—just months before CNN’s ride-along—Obama launched controversial family deportation raids that sparked outrage from immigration activists.
Politico captured the moment with a blunt headline: “Obama kicks off family deportation raids.”
Yet CNN never labeled Obama a tyrant. There were no calls to abolish ICE. There were no segments comparing deportations to human rights abuses. Enforcement was treated as a normal function of government.
The Trump Era: Same Raids, Manufactured Outrage
Fast forward to Trump’s return to office, and CNN’s posture changed dramatically.
The same ICE operations—targeting criminal aliens, executing early-morning arrests, and wearing standard tactical gear—were suddenly described as acts of oppression. CNN breathlessly framed agents as “federal forces” invading cities.
After the shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, CNN devoted wall-to-wall coverage to protests, portraying them as a moral uprising rather than civil unrest. The network amplified local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who publicly told ICE agents to “get the f*** out of Minneapolis.”
Former Obama officials now regularly appear on CNN to denounce enforcement tactics they once oversaw themselves.
Hypocrisy Proven Beyond Dispute
The resurfaced 2016 footage is more than embarrassing—it’s damning.
When ICE arrested criminals under Obama, CNN embedded reporters and praised the agency’s role in public safety. When ICE enforces the same laws under Trump, CNN depicts it as state-sponsored terror.
The job never changed. Arrest criminal illegal aliens. Remove them from the country. Protect communities.
Obama called it “prioritize felons, not families” and deported millions with media applause. Trump follows the same enforcement logic and is accused of running concentration camps.
That viral CNN video didn’t just expose bias—it proved that the media’s immigration outrage is purely political.
