An Indiana judge appointed by Bill Clinton has ruled that taxpayers must cover the cost of a sex change surgery for a convicted baby killer, overriding state law that bans such procedures from being funded by the public.
U.S. District Judge Richard Young ordered the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) to provide the surgery to inmate Jonathan Richardson—who now identifies as “Autumn Cordellioné”—at “the earliest opportunity.” Richardson was convicted in 2001 for the horrific killing of his then-wife’s 11-month-old daughter.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit against the IDOC on Richardson’s behalf in 2023, arguing that denying the surgery would be a violation of the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment.” Despite a clear Indiana law banning taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners, the judge sided with the ACLU.
