For conservatives who have long argued that Newsom is a polished product of privilege, the photos reinforce what they believe voters are only now beginning to see.
The controversy erupted after Newsom appeared in Atlanta on a book tour stop promoting his memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry.” Sharing the stage with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Newsom attempted to connect with the audience by portraying himself as academically average and relatable.
“I’m not trying to impress you. I’m just trying to impress upon you, ‘I’m like you.’ I’m no better than you. I’m a 960 SAT guy.”
What may have been intended as self-deprecating humor quickly turned into political dynamite.
Newsom continued, “And I’m not trying to offend anyone. I’m not trying to act all there if you got 940 … You’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.”
