The Republican establishment isn’t waiting long to make its move.
A new report claims the old Bush political network is quietly preparing to reassert control over the party the moment Donald Trump exits the White House in 2029. And if true, it signals a major clash brewing between the America First movement and the GOP’s pre-Trump power brokers.
George W. Bush has spent most of his post-presidency far from Washington’s political knife fights, settling into a life of golf, charity outings, art, and hometown events in Texas. Since leaving office, he has rarely jumped back into partisan conflict, other than campaigning for his brother Jeb in the 2016 primary.
Bush has occasionally complained about Trump’s stance on borders and nationalism, at one point accusing him of fueling what Bush called “nativism,” but largely kept his distance. Yet that posture may be changing.
Recently, Bush’s public appearances and interviews have noticeably increased. Meanwhile, some of his old allies are begging him to step forward again. Michael Steele, former RNC chairman who now hosts on MSNBC, practically pleaded with him on air. “President Bush, please man, we could use your voice right now,” Steele said, staring directly into the camera. “You have a voice that would resonate with a lot more Americans than some folks around you are telling you,” he added.
