“We have still so many beautiful moments of joy and connection, and I think that’s really important to share because I think there’s such a negative narrative around dementia,” Heming Willis tells Lui in the clip, referencing the star’s initial diagnosis aphasia (which turned into frontotemporal dementia) in 2023. “We need to be careful and reframe that. When we think about that or don’t want to talk about dementia and put it in a corner, the person living with the disease and their caregiver aren’t seen, they aren’t supported.”
Willis’ health struggles first became public when his family announced that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a disorder that can affect a person’s ability to communicate.
His loved ones subsequently revealed that doctors had reached a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia, commonly known as FTD.
The condition brought an abrupt change to the life and career of one of Hollywood’s most recognizable action stars.
Willis became a household name through films including “Die Hard,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Armageddon,” and “The Fifth Element,” building a decades-long career that made him one of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable leading men.
But behind the public discussion surrounding his condition, Heming Willis says the family has worked to establish a new rhythm centered on supporting Bruce rather than focusing exclusively on what the disease has taken away.
She said “it’s important to know that it’s hard and it’s a terrible disease, but we have so many moments of joy and connection that aren’t your norm, but it’s okay.”
She adds of the family: “We’ve learned to adapt and show up for Bruce.”
That support extends across Willis’ large blended family.
Willis and Heming Willis married in 2009 after meeting at a gym in Los Angeles. The couple has two daughters together, Mabel and Evelyn.
Willis is also the father of Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Willis from his previous marriage to actress Demi Moore.
Moore has remained close to her former husband and has joined the rest of the family in supporting him as his health has declined.
The family has occasionally allowed fans to see glimpses of Willis away from the Hollywood spotlight.
One of those rare moments came during daughter Tallulah’s wedding celebrations in August, when Willis appeared in a family photograph from the weekend.
“A tender moment with my dad and Justin at the start of wedding weekend,” Tallulah wrote in a caption accompanying a photo of Willis and her husband.
The appearance provided fans with a rare look at the actor, who has largely remained outside public view since his family announced his health problems.
Heming Willis has also worked to educate the public about some of the lesser-known symptoms associated with dementia.
During an earlier appearance on the “Conversations With Cam” podcast, she discussed anosognosia, a neurological condition that can prevent a person from recognizing or understanding his or her own illness.
“I think they think this is their normal. That’s not for everybody. There’s this term — this neurological condition that comes with FTD and other types of dementia — called anosognosia, where your brain can’t identify what’s happening to it,” Emma said on the Conversations With Cam podcast. “People think this might be denial, they don’t want to go to the doctor because they’re like, ‘I’m fine’ — this is where the anosognosia comes into play. It’s not denial, it’s just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease.”
Her comments highlight an aspect of dementia that families and caregivers can find particularly difficult to navigate.
For Heming Willis, speaking publicly about those realities has increasingly become part of her role as both a wife and caregiver.
Rather than presenting the family’s experience solely through the lens of tragedy, she has repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving connection and recognizing the humanity of people living with dementia.
That perspective is also central to “Because We Care with Richard Lui,” which focuses on caregivers and the enormous emotional responsibilities families can face when a loved one develops a serious medical condition.
For Willis’ family, the battle has clearly transformed everyday life.
But they are determined not to allow a diagnosis to become the entirety of Bruce Willis’ story.
The Hollywood star who spent decades playing seemingly indestructible heroes on the big screen now faces a much more personal struggle away from the cameras.
And according to his wife, the family is meeting that challenge together — adapting to circumstances they never expected while continuing to treasure the moments when Bruce is simply Bruce.
Those moments may look different than they once did, but Heming Willis’ message is clear: joy, love and connection remain very much alive inside the Willis family.
