Shock and frustration rippled through Rhode Island late Sunday night after authorities confirmed that the individual arrested in connection with Saturday’s deadly shooting at Brown University has been released without charges. The announcement came during a late-night press conference, raising serious questions about the direction of the investigation and leaving the community on edge as the true suspect remains at large.
Law enforcement officials had previously indicated progress in the case after a person of interest was taken into custody early Sunday morning. That arrest followed an intensive overnight search and was initially viewed as a major breakthrough in the investigation into the deadly campus attack that left two people dead and nine others wounded.
The arrest occurred at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 28 miles south of Providence. Authorities said the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team was deployed after investigators received a public tip. Using cellphone data, federal agents were able to geolocate the individual, described as a male in his 20s, according to a statement released by FBI Director Kash Patel.
