Donald Trump’s supporters who believed his administration would hold the line on illegal immigration are reeling after a revelation that one of his trusted Cabinet officials is championing a plan that critics say amounts to mass amnesty.

The uproar erupted after Trump stunned the crowd at his Iowa State Fairgrounds rally on July 3. Standing before supporters expecting red-meat immigration rhetoric, Trump instead dropped a political bombshell. He announced that his administration was “working on legislation” that would create a legal pathway for undocumented workers in agriculture and hospitality to remain in the country.¹
But it was what he said next that set off alarm bells across the MAGA movement. Trump turned to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and declared from the stage, “You’re the one that brought this whole situation up.”²
The President recounted how Rollins approached him, saying, “So we have a little problem. The farmers are losing a lot of people, and we figured it out.” Trump acknowledged the backlash this would cause among his loyalists, adding, “Now, serious radical right people, who I also happen to like a lot, they may not be quite as happy, but they’ll understand, won’t they?”⁴
