Massive Layoffs to Begin the Process
“Today we are beginning the process to cut the total number of staff at the Department of Education roughly in half,” a top official revealed to reporters.
The first step? Eliminating wasteful redundancies.
“We are focusing on eliminating full teams whose operations are either redundant or not necessary for the functioning of the department,” the official stated.
To prevent workplace disruptions, the administration is putting fired employees on paid leave as they transition out.
“We’re going to have these folks roll over their responsibilities by Friday, March 21st. They will then go on paid administrative leave until the reduction in force is complete,” a Trump official explained. “They will be teleworking from tomorrow until March 21st. Then all of that is being done for safety reasons to protect the 2,183 employees that are going to remain after the RIF is complete.”
Trump’s Goal: Shut It Down for Good
For anyone still doubting Trump’s commitment to eliminating the Department of Education, Education Secretary Linda McMahon made it crystal clear during an interview with Laura Ingraham.
“Yes — actually, it is,” McMahon confirmed when asked if Trump still intended to close the department.
McMahon explained that Trump personally directed her to work herself out of a job by dismantling the department entirely.
“That was the president’s mandate,” McMahon stated. “His directive to me clearly is to shut down the Department of Education.”
The move, she explained, is about eliminating waste and giving taxpayers a break.
“What we did today was to take the first step of eliminating what I think is bureaucratic bloat,” McMahon said.
Union Boss Melts Down Over the News
Predictably, Teachers Union President Randi Weingarten lashed out, falsely claiming that shutting down the department would take away children’s education.
McMahon wasn’t having it.
“Well, clearly we’re not taking away education,” McMahon fired back. “The President never said that. He’s taking the bureaucracy out of education so that more money flows to the states.”
