As the Biden administration’s border policies come under fire, their impact is being felt in even the wealthiest corners of America. Since August, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested eight illegal aliens in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The charges are serious: violent crimes, including assaults and sexual offenses. These arrests have sent shockwaves through the tight-knit communities of the islands, where crime of this magnitude is virtually unheard of.
One resident, Toby Brown, chair of the Nantucket Republican Party, expressed his concern: “We need to have this conversation and not just keep having this… idea that if you’re somehow worried, you’re a racist,” Brown told Fox News Digital. “People just need to not be afraid to speak up.”
Massachusetts is considered a sanctuary state, meaning local law enforcement is often limited in how it cooperates with federal immigration authorities. But this sanctuary status has done little to stop the tide of dangerous criminals entering the state. Just in September, ICE’s Boston office arrested five illegal aliens on Nantucket for various heinous crimes, including sex crimes against both minors and adults. Despite the gravity of the arrests, the island’s residents appear to be turning a blind eye.
“This island was more worried about when [actor] Kevin Spacey got charged back in 2016 [than sex crimes by illegal aliens],” Brown stated. His comments reflect the frustration felt by many who believe that serious crimes are being overlooked in favor of maintaining the island’s image as a celebrity sanctuary.
Illegal immigrants, many of whom work on the island with or without proper documentation, are an essential part of the workforce supporting Nantucket’s bustling tourism industry. As Brown pointed out, these issues were not a shock to many who have kept a close eye on local court reports over the past year. “When you follow the court reports in the last year or so, there have been quite a bit of violent arrests,” Brown said. “Maybe it was surprising ICE came out here, but not surprising that they had to come out here.”
Brown, who runs a lawn care business on Nantucket, expressed concern about the lack of vetting for workers on the island. “I ask that I hope that employers, landlords, everybody just, we just need to vet out people and, you know, and maybe there are more ways we can do that,” he urged.
The veteran business owner admitted he takes extra precautions to ensure his employees are vetted properly, a practice he believes more businesses should adopt. “I would just feel horrible if, because of me wanting to make a little more money or being a little more lazy, that I just hire somebody and I hope all goes well,” Brown explained. “[And that hire] committed some heinous crime.”
As Brown’s comments make clear, the crisis at the border is not just affecting southern states—it’s infiltrating even the most exclusive communities, including Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard. With criminal activities by illegal aliens now hitting close to home, the question remains: how will these wealthy communities respond to protect their residents?

The Biden administration’s handling of the border has far-reaching consequences, now felt even in elite corners like Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The arrests of violent criminals in these communities expose a harsh reality: no matter how wealthy or secluded a place may seem, it’s not immune to the ripple effects of a porous border.
Toby Brown’s call for an open conversation on these issues is timely. While immigration is a complex and divisive topic, the safety of American communities must remain a top priority. Whether it’s a bustling urban center or a serene island retreat, no one should feel complacent when dangerous criminals are on the loose.
As the border crisis continues to impact communities far and wide, the residents of places like Martha’s Vineyard may soon be forced to confront the reality that their idyllic escapes are not immune to the consequences of national policies.
