Leading Democrats join growing push to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, encouraging caucus to back conservative Republicans and vote him out.
By rejecting a request to delay the vote on speaker removal, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is sending a clear message. This demonstrates Jeffries’ desire to swiftly replace McCarthy. In order to remove McCarthy from office, Jeffries only needs the support of five conservative Republicans out of the 212 members of his caucus.

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who spearheaded the McCarthy insurrection and initiated the motion to vacate, asserted on Tuesday that either McCarthy or President Joe Biden is “lying” regarding a potential agreement to increase financial assistance to Ukraine, a major funding issue for the U.S. government. In the end, Speaker McCarthy had to rely on the Democrats to pay for a three-week extension; however, he did not add a package of help, which would have cost him significant support from his own caucus.
Gaetz remarked when speaking with reporters: “We heard the president come out and say there was a deal with the Speaker on Ukraine and the Speaker just stood up in front of all of us and said that that there’s no deal on Ukraine. The House Democrats say there’s a deal on Ukraine, so we’re going to have to sort that out. We’re going to have to sort out who’s lying.”
