In a stunning turn of events, both federal cases against President Donald Trump have been dismissed following motions filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The decision comes as Trump is set to return to the White House after his 2024 election victory, reviving his plan to overhaul the Department of Justice.
Judge Tanya Chutkan confirmed the dismissal of the DC case without prejudice, citing the temporary nature of presidential immunity. “Dismissal without prejudice is also consistent with the Government’s understanding that the immunity afforded to a sitting President is temporary, expiring when they leave office,” Chutkan wrote.
