A 32-year-old social justice and climate change activist named Ryan Carson was brutally murdered in Brooklyn.
At 4:10 in the morning, Carson was severely stabbed in the chest near Lafayette Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard. The event happened when he and his fiancée were waiting for a bus after attending a wedding. (Referring to CBS New York)
The unpredictable suspect approached Carson and said, “What are you looking at?” before opening fire and killing him.
At Kings County Hospital, Carson was pronounced dead, but the culprit is still at large.
The New York Post claims that Carson was an environmental activist who focused on sustainability and environmental laws. Additionally, he was a published poet who once wrote a poem titled “Anxiety” on his worries about passing away.
Following Carson’s departure, a torrent of condolences from friends and acquaintances swamped social media.
Emily Gallagher, a Democratic state assemblywoman from New York, offered condolences on platform X.
“I am devastated to share that my dear friend Ryan Carson, who worked for NYPIRG and created the advocacy organization “No OD NY”, was murdered last night. I met Ryan many years ago through the DIY punk scene and he has been a trusted friend in Albany and at home. I miss him.”

Sandy Nurse, a Democrat and member of the NYC Council, also expressed her sympathy. “Our team was devastated to hear of Ryan Carson’s passing today. Ryan was a dedicated environmental advocate who worked tirelessly to protect our communities and ecosystems from the climate crisis. I send my condolences to all of his family and loved ones who are grieving.”
Chi Ossé, a member of NYC, also expressed gratitude, “I’m horrified to learn of the brutal murder of advocate Ryan Carson in Brooklyn today. This tireless defender of his neighbors was stolen from us. Committed to ending this senseless violence, my heart is with his family.”
Carson was a significant contributor to the New York Public Interest Research Group Fund (NYPIRG), which released the following statement:
NYPIRG announces the terrible death of our longtime campaign organizer Ryan Thoresen Carson, who was killed in a street encounter close to his home, with shock and deep regret.
Ryan joined NYPIRG when he was a Pratt Institute student. He soon accepted the position of chapter representative on the student board of directors of NYPIRG. Ryan served the company faithfully for eleven years, holding a variety of responsibilities. He improved our community engagement program, was a standout project coordinator on campus, and most recently managed the Senior Solid Waste Campaign. In this capacity, Ryan successfully oversaw a statewide initiative to strengthen and update the state’s bottle deposit law.
Ryan was a well-liked employee, friend, and colleague as well as a passionate, talented, persistent, and enthusiastic supporter of students and the environment. He was successful in pushing the issues he was passionate about in both his professional and personal life because to his endearing demeanor, loud laugh, and all-encompassing brilliance. Ryan was a model team player who was happy to do the fundamental “blocking and tackling” work required to move an issue forward and win, but who also shone in the limelight as a leader, campaign manager, and spokesman.
NYPIRG sends its sincere sympathies to Ryan’s family, Claudia, his partner, as well as his friends and coworkers.
