The Utah Code does not deem the Bible to contain sensitive content, according to the committee spokesperson. Despite this, they have chosen to ban it from a few schools merely on the grounds that it is not age-appropriate.

In March, Fox 13 News reported on a petition from parents that read: “Utah Parents United left off one of the most sex-ridden books around: The Bible. You’ll no doubt find that the Bible has ‘no serious values for minors’ because it’s pornographic by our new definition.”

According to Fox 13 News:

Sensitive content was prohibited in schools by a law established by the Utah State Legislator in 2022. Numerous novels have been prohibited in numerous state school systems since its enactment.

Rep. Ivory stated, “We’re simply clarifying age-appropriate limits. When many groups characterize this as banning books, that really is an attempt to just, you know, hyperbolize what’s going on.”

Numerous novels have been prohibited since its passage in numerous state school systems.

Now that the law is in force, schools are required to take any books out of the classroom that:

  • Human genitalia stimulated or aroused during sexual activity
  • Masturbation or sexual activity by humans
  • touching a person’s pubic area or genitalia in an obscene manner

The district will now create a committee made up of three members of the Davis School District Board of Education to handle that appeal. After reviewing the initial grievance and the appeal, they will submit a recommendation to the whole board for a vote.

The ultimate decision will be made by the board at a subsequent open meeting. There is no defined time for that yet.

The Bible will be put back on the shelves if the board determines it is suitable for all students, according to Williams.

Other religious works, such as the Book of Mormon, Torah, and Quran, are currently available for loan without age limits from Davis School District. Those have not faced opposition.
