New York City’s far-left mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has already announced his first big move before even stepping foot into office on January 1 — and it’s raising plenty of eyebrows across the five boroughs. Mamdani told NBC New York that he plans to reach out to President Trump, insisting that a cooperative relationship with the White House “will be critical to the success of the city.”
Mamdani made it clear that he intends to initiate the outreach personally. “I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office,” he told the outlet, though he avoided giving any sort of timeline. The comment, originally reported by the New York Post, left many wondering whether the incoming mayor is attempting to brace himself for the firm stance Trump has taken on crime and the border.
Despite his progressive record, Mamdani insisted he won’t shy away from Trump’s policies — even the ones he normally rails against. He claimed he will be “proactive” when dealing with the administration’s full-force approach to law enforcement and illegal immigration. For a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, that declaration alone raised more questions than answers.
Mamdani also tried to project a willingness to work with the president on practical issues. “[If] President Trump wants to speak about lowering the cost of living or delivering cheaper groceries, like he ran on [in 2024], I’m there to have that conversation,” he said, signaling that even he can’t ignore the inflation crushing New Yorkers.
