For years, Dr. Anthony Fauci was one of the most recognizable faces of America’s COVID-19 response. But after appearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee last week, the longtime government health official left lawmakers with far more questions than answers.
Fauci appeared before the committee on July 29 after being subpoenaed to testify about his handling of the pandemic, the origins of COVID-19, and controversial issues surrounding government-funded research. The hearing quickly became one of the most contentious congressional examinations of Fauci’s pandemic-era leadership.
Rather than providing detailed answers, Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights. According to reports, he did so 111 times during the hearing. Fauci argued that the proceedings were politically motivated and said his attorneys advised him not to answer questions that could potentially expose him to further legal jeopardy.
