Senate Democrats are under fire for pushing a Social Security reform bill that critics argue could harm retirees in the long run. Ironically, this move comes after months of accusations that former President Donald Trump planned to dismantle the program.
The proposed Social Security Fairness Act has already passed the House of Representatives and is now being fast-tracked in the Senate. Supporters, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, claim the bill is designed to repeal provisions that reduce benefits for public sector employees like teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Schumer touted the effort on social media, saying the legislation would ensure these workers are not “erroneously denied their well-earned Social Security benefits.”

However, opponents argue that the bill comes with a staggering financial burden. According to The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), the legislation would cost $190 billion over the next decade. Critics warn this could accelerate Social Security’s insolvency timeline, which is already projected for 2034.
