In a move stirring intense backlash, the Biden administration has significantly reduced the number of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the infamous detention facility for terrorists and terror suspects. This surprise development, labeled a “secret operation” by The New York Times, unfolded early Monday and resulted in the transfer of 11 prisoners to the Middle East, according to reports.

The Department of Defense announced the transfer through a news release only after it had occurred. The detainees, all Yemeni nationals, were sent to the Sultanate of Oman. These individuals, captured in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, were described as former members of al-Qaida. Two among them allegedly served as bodyguards to Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attacks, according to the New York Post.
