In a press briefing held at the White House this Monday, President Joe Biden addressed the nation following a pivotal Supreme Court decision that ruled in favor of presidential immunity for official acts. The ruling has sparked a wave of controversy, with Biden making several contentious statements during his five-minute address, after which he promptly exited without fielding questions from the press.
Biden expressed his alarm at the decision, asserting, “For all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a President can do. This is a fundamentally new principle, and it’s a dangerous precedent, because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law, even including the Supreme Court of the United States. The only limits will be self-imposed by the President alone.”

The left wing has voiced fears that this decision effectively bestows dictatorial powers upon the president. However, Chief Justice John Roberts clarified that the ruling does not place the president “above the law,” and is confined solely to official acts. Roberts indicated that lower courts need to determine whether the actions central to former President Trump’s January 6 case qualify as “official.”
