Amid the heated political climate leading up to the next presidential election, senior Democrats, including some of President Joe Biden’s closest aides, are sounding alarms over what they perceive as a failing campaign strategy against likely GOP nominee Donald Trump. These concerns focus on the Biden campaign’s emphasis on the January 6 Capitol riot and framing Trump as a “threat to democracy,” tactics reported by Axios that seem to resonate insufficiently with voters preoccupied by more immediate economic concerns.
Axios highlights a sense of isolation among Biden’s core strategists, particularly long-time aide Mike Donilon, who remains committed to this narrative. This approach has created divisions within the party, with many feeling that these tactics are out of step with the pressing issues that polls suggest will likely decide the election. Despite a modest bump in support following Trump’s criminal conviction, polling data consistently shows Biden lagging behind or barely tied with Trump.

Concerns extend beyond the strategy itself to the electorate’s pressing issues. Polls indicate that while voters are worried about the state of democracy, their primary concerns lie with inflation and the economy. Interestingly, while Biden’s democracy-focused message might be gaining traction with older voters, it’s reportedly falling flat with key Democratic demographics, including black and Latino voters, young adults, and union members.
A Democratic strategist, speaking to Axios under the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, expressed doubts about the Biden team’s awareness of the campaign’s precarious position. “It is unclear to many of us watching from the outside whether the president and his core team realize how dire the situation is right now, and whether they even have a plan to fix it. That is scary,” the strategist said.
The reluctance to challenge or suggest changes within Biden’s inner circle is another issue stirring concern. Close associates of the president are reportedly wary of voicing dissent, fearing ostracization from Biden’s group of loyal aides. This atmosphere stifles open discussion about necessary strategic shifts, potentially locking the campaign into an unproductive course.
