Jim Jordan (R-OH), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, presents solid evidence of the Biden Administration’s leverage over Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms to stifle users suspected of spreading “misinformation” among Americans.
Lists of memes and other posts that opposed the Biden Administration’s COVID-19 and vaccination policies were sent to Facebook and Instagram. In an email addressed to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg in April 2021, a Facebook employee acknowledged the pressure from external stakeholders, including the White House.
Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president for international relations, informed the White House that a list of the top 100 postings about vaccines had been sent to them in April 2021. In an email, Andy Slavitt, a senior advisor to President Biden, reportedly expressed his great concern over the failure to remove a particular widely shared tweet.
The disputed post included a meme dissuading vaccinations, suggesting that any adverse effects would lead to later marketing for class-action lawsuits.
“I countered that removing content like that would represent a significant incursion into traditional boundaries of free expression in the US,” Clegg wrote, referencing his reply to Slavitt. “But he replied that the post was directly comparing Covid vaccines to asbestos poisoning in a way which demonstrably inhibits confidence in Covid vaccines among those the Biden Administration is trying to reach.”
As reported by Jordan on Twitter, talking points were made for Clegg in an effort to appease the Biden White House. He went on to mention another instance in which the administration asked that a post by former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson be deleted. Facebook cut the post’s reach by 50% in order to comply with the White House’s requests.
Facebook enacted new regulations in August 2021 to stop the spread of “misinformation” by censoring content vigorously.
