King Charles III found himself at the center of an unexpected spectacle during a ceremonial appearance in Antigua after a sudden tropical downpour drenched the British monarch just moments after he arrived for the country’s independence celebrations.
The awkward weather mishap unfolded Sunday at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, where Charles and Queen Camilla attended Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence Ceremonial Parade. What was supposed to be a formal royal engagement quickly turned into an amusing scene as heavy rain swept across the stadium.
The timing could hardly have been worse. The royal couple’s Caribbean visit was already attracting considerable attention, not only because of their official engagements but also because of renewed demands for Britain to apologize and pay reparations for its historical involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
Yet it was the king’s reaction to the weather that ultimately provided one of the day’s most memorable moments.
