Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) blasts U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA), the GOP’s most recent contender for House Speaker, for allegedly being involved in an election-overturning “strategy.” In a widely shared video, Ocasio-Cortez also draws attention to Johnson’s harassment of a congressional journalist.
Ocasio-Cortez posted a video on X in which a reporter inquires about her supposed involvement in the events on January 6. “Introducing extremist GOP Speaker nominee Mike Johnson,” she wrote, “He was a key architect of the Jan 6th strategy to overturn the US election.”
Following a wild election, Johnson is the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the house, expressed his worries with Johnson’s candidacy as well, saying, “Mike Johnson has a very pleasant demeanor, but his voting record is as extreme as the most extreme members of his conference with very few exceptions.”
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer unexpectedly withdrew from the contest shortly after receiving the nomination, which led to Johnson’s selection. Emmer made his decision in response to criticism from a number of House Republicans as well as a contentious statement made by the previous president, Donald Trump, characterizing Emmer as a “globalist RINO.”
Unexpected developments in the GOP Speaker contest prompted a surge of candidates, including Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), to make last-minute bids to take the gavel. However, Johnson won the night, and by morning, rumors had it that the crowd burst into “Mike!” shouts as Republicans banded together to applaud him.

On Wednesday, there will be a critical floor vote that will determine Johnson’s fate. If he is elected, he will take over as Speaker of the House, taking over for McCarthy, who was just fired.
