The most eye catching expense was a $23,000 payment labeled as “venue rental” to the Coliseo de Puerto Rico. That is the same arena where AOC was later seen partying from box seats at a sold out Bad Bunny concert on August 10.
Social media videos from the night showed Ocasio Cortez dancing and celebrating alongside fellow New York Democrat Nydia Velázquez.
Campaign records show the Coliseo de Puerto Rico received payments on June 24 and August 25, raising questions about whether donor funds were used to underwrite a luxury concert experience.
Lecturing locals while living like an elite outsider
While enjoying high end accommodations, Ocasio Cortez also toured housing projects in San Juan, where she criticized wealthy outsiders for driving up housing costs and displacing residents.
The contrast was impossible to miss.
Her campaign spent $15,489 on two upscale San Juan hotels, with individual charges ranging from $680 to more than $9,400. Dining expenses added another $10,743, including meals at popular upscale restaurants like Cocina Abierta and Verde Mesa.
When questioned by Fox News, AOC’s campaign manager defended the spending, saying she “regularly travels to Puerto Rico to support local causes and host events that require both staff and security.”
Critics were not convinced.
A national tour of luxury under a socialist banner
The Puerto Rico spending spree was not an isolated case.
During the same three month reporting period, Ocasio Cortez racked up additional luxury expenses while touring the country on her so called “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Senator Bernie Sanders.
Campaign records show nearly $5,000 spent at Hotel Vermont in Burlington, almost $2,000 at the Thompson Central Park in Manhattan, and roughly $3,000 at Brooklyn’s Arlo Williamsburg, a trendy hotel known for its rooftop bar and upscale amenities.
Restaurant spending followed the same pattern. More than $6,300 was spent at a Washington, D.C. restaurant called Ama, along with $4,500 spent on ice cream from an upstate New York vendor.
All of this happened while AOC and Sanders repeatedly warned crowds about billionaires, excess wealth, and elite privilege.
Sanders shows the same hypocrisy
Bernie Sanders has long preached austerity and sacrifice, but campaign disclosures reveal his own contradictions.
His political action committee spent $221,000 on private jet travel in just the first quarter of 2025, even as he lectures Americans about climate change and carbon footprints.
The message to voters appears clear. Socialism demands sacrifice, but not from socialist leaders.
A long history of elite indulgence
This is far from the first time Ocasio Cortez has faced criticism for hypocrisy.
She was previously caught vacationing maskless in Florida during the height of COVID restrictions while Democrats were attacking Governor Ron DeSantis for reopening the state.
She has also flown first class to campaign events while tweeting about income inequality.
The 2021 Met Gala controversy further damaged her image. Ocasio Cortez attended the exclusive event after allegedly requesting tickets to the $70,000 per couple gathering. Reports later revealed unpaid bills connected to the appearance, including $344.85 for makeup that went to collections.
Sanders, meanwhile, owns three homes, including a $575,000 lakefront property in Vermont. His book titled It’s OK To Be Angry About Capitalism became a bestseller, supported by promotional events with tickets priced as high as $95.
The real meaning of socialist leadership
Ocasio Cortez now drives a $64,000 Tesla and lives in buildings where studio apartments start at around $2,000 per month. Her campaign also continues to pay Frank Llewellyn, a former national director of the Democratic Socialists of America, with more than $250,000 in payments since 2018.
The pattern is becoming difficult to ignore.
While voters are told to tighten their belts, accept higher prices, and reject aspiration, the leaders preaching socialism appear to enjoy every luxury modern capitalism provides.
Once again, AOC has demonstrated what critics have warned all along. For America’s socialist politicians, equality is a slogan, sacrifice is for others, and luxury is a privilege reserved for themselves.
