Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has made a career out of her self-styled image as a tough Bronx native who rose from bartender to progressive star. But a growing number of locals and critics say the New York congresswoman’s carefully curated origin story doesn’t match the facts.
The firebrand Democrat, who burst onto the scene in 2018 and quickly became the face of the far-left “Squad,” is now under pressure to explain why she’s been selling voters an image of herself as a child of the Bronx’s gritty streets—when records and residents say she grew up in leafy Westchester County.
The latest storm blew up after Ocasio-Cortez decided to hurl insults at former President Donald Trump, who recently labeled her “one of the dumbest people in Congress.” Ocasio-Cortez fired back online:
“Also, I’m a Bronx girl. You should know that we can eat Queens boys for breakfast. Respectfully.”
But that bold claim quickly triggered a backlash. New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater jumped in with photographic evidence, posting a yearbook photo showing AOC as a high school student not in the Bronx but in Yorktown Heights—a wealthy suburb roughly 40 miles from the city.
