Widdecombe, 78, was a familiar figure in British politics for decades. The former Conservative Member of Parliament and Reform UK spokeswoman was found dead at her home in Haytor, a quiet village located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England.
According to prosecutor Kashif Malik, Kerry allegedly traveled to Widdecombe’s isolated residence while she was having lunch. Prosecutors told the court that he repeatedly attacked her with a hammer before taking her wallet and leaving the scene.
Authorities said the provisional cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
The horrifying allegations immediately raised questions about whether the attack was simply a murder or something more politically motivated.
Kerry was formally charged with murder on Monday after spending days in police custody. Investigators initially arrested him on suspicion of murder, but the case quickly expanded after authorities reportedly uncovered additional evidence during their investigation.
Police later rearrested Kerry on suspicion of involvement in the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism. Prosecutors emphasized that investigators are still working to determine a motive and have not ruled out either political or terrorist connections.
