One of America’s most volatile volcanoes could be on the verge of a major eruption, with scientists warning that an explosive event is “likely” in the coming weeks.
Mount Spurr, a stratovolcano about 80 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, is showing alarming signs of activity. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), the mountain is emitting significantly high levels of volcanic gas, signaling that magma is moving beneath the surface.

During recent monitoring flights on March 7 and 11, experts measured “significantly elevated volcanic gas emissions” at the volcano’s Crater Peak vent, along with new fumaroles (gas vents). Increased earthquake activity and ground deformation have also been detected.
