The legal situation surrounding Alec Baldwin is becoming increasingly precarious as his trial approaches. The recent conviction and sentencing of Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the “Rust” film set, have set a somber tone for Baldwin’s own legal fight. Gutierrez Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died after a gun Baldwin was handling discharged a live round.
According to legal experts, this development could signal trouble for Baldwin, who faces the same charge of involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin, who was both a producer and the lead actor on “Rust,” is set to stand trial on July 9 in a New Mexico court. “This is bad news for Alec Baldwin and shows the court is taking this fatal shooting seriously and that it’s not just for show, as his defenders claim,” Miguel Custodio, a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles and co-founder of Custodio and Dubey LLP, told Fox News.

Custodio also noted that a plea deal would be Baldwin’s best strategy at this point, given the recent sentencing and the details known about the chaotic conditions on the set. However, he expressed skepticism about such an outcome: “But I don’t see that happening.”
Custodio further speculated on Baldwin’s potential legal strategy, suggesting that Baldwin might hope to convince a jury that the culpability rests solely with the already convicted Gutierrez Reed. This strategy could prove risky, especially given Baldwin’s extensive involvement in the film’s production as a producer. “That’s a risky proposition, given Baldwin’s role as a producer actually involves him in all aspects of the production. Potential jurors will clearly know what went on with Gutierrez Reed and will really scrutinize Baldwin’s lack of responsibility for the chaos on the set,” Custodio explained.
